Nepitella (Calamintha nepeta) a perennial shrub, forming a compact mound of shiny, green oregano-like leaves. The flowers are lavender pink. The plant reaches a height of 18 inches. Nepitella smells like a cross between mint, basil and oregano. It attracts honeybees and butterflies. Usually grows in the Summer, and well into the autumn. It can become dormant in the winter months, then reblossom in spring. In autumn, the flowers fall to the ground and will self-seed. Seedlings will flower in late August.
Idoor: Sow thinly in a lightweight soil mix. Cover twice seeds thickness with soil. Press firmly and water. Keep evenly moist but not soggy. As seedlings appear, gradually expose them to light. When large enough to handle, transplant to pots. Harden by gradual exposure to outdoor conditions. After spring frosts transplant to garden 30-90cm (12-36in) apart.
